You asked for it. Now accept it.

You asked for it. Now accept it.

Happy Thursday!

Abundance is one of the Eight Happiness Essentials I think about most carefully. The distance between receiving it and accepting it is wider than most people expect, and even fewer people name what lives in that gap.

Early in my television career, I wanted what was beginning to come toward me. Bigger shows, more creative responsibility, a real chance to lead. And when those possibilities began to appear, something in me shied away, sometimes ran.

What if I was not talented enough, not strong enough as a leader, not capable of making the right call at the right moment?

That gap, between wanting something and being willing to fully receive it, cost me in ways I did not see clearly until much later.

When something you genuinely wanted arrives, something else often arrives alongside it. A hesitation, the sense that this may be more than you bargained for, that you might not actually deserve it, that reaching for it fully might prove you were never meant to have it. Abundance can arrive before your sense of deserving it has caught up.

Receiving is what happens when something comes your way. Accepting is what you do with it, and it requires a genuine belief, held in the body and not only the mind, that you are allowed to have what you asked for, that you are worthy of it, and that you can be trusted with it.

Without that belief, what arrives does not stay. You receive it and release it in the same motion, and you may never notice it happening.

The practice that changes this works in three steps.

Ask. Clearly, honestly, without softening what you mean into something more manageable. Name what you actually want.

Act. Within twenty-four hours, do or recall one thing that shows you are already moving toward what you named.

Accept. This is the step that asks the most. It requires you to examine what you believe you deserve, what you are prepared to be responsible for, and whether you can stay with what arrives rather than allowing it to pass through.

Return to these steps again and again. That is how the belief in yourself and what you can accept builds.

What you want most may already be closer than your current thinking allows.

Understanding that gap and accepting that I was talented enough, capable enough, and strong enough opened doors to opportunities that have led to a life I love so much today.

PHOTO OP + ACTION OPPORTUNITY

An Abundance Practice: The Door Already Open

This reflection, inspired by the practices in Take a Shot at Happiness, helps you notice where Abundance is already available to you.

Personal Reflection

Think of something you genuinely want. A creative opportunity, a meaningful relationship, recognition for something you have created. Now ask yourself, honestly: do you believe you are allowed to have it, that you deserve it?

Sit with that question. Write what you notice, including the parts that tug at you.

Photo Op

Photograph one thing that holds the feeling of a door opening in the right direction, toward what you want. Let it be a real moment from your day, one that carries a sense of access or possibility.

Action Opportunity

Look at your photograph and write about what you are asking for. Name one responsibility that receiving it would place on you, and one action you will take in the next twenty-four hours. Save your words and image in the Take a Shot at Happiness App.

Book

In Take a Shot at Happiness: How to Write, Direct & Produce the Life You Want, Abundance is one of the eight Happiness Essentials. Through reflective writing, camera phone photography, and contemplative prompts, the book helps you recognize where you are already holding more than you realize, and how to practice receiving what you have asked for.

The companion app offers a place to record reflections, save images, and revisit moments that help you understand what supports your wellbeing.
