Today: What Survivor Taught Me About Rest

A NEWSLETTER FOR THE PURPOSEFUL TRAVELER, EXPLORING HOW TRAVEL CHANGES THE WAY YOU SEE YOUR LIFE.

Happiness Essential: Health Edition

Happy Sunday!

When people think of Survivor, they usually picture the contestants.

I remember the noise.

I would stand on a beach for hours with an earpiece in one ear feeding me whatever a contestant was saying and another feeding me production chatter, while someone stood in front of me with a question that needed an answer right then.

Three streams of input at once, nonstop.

For hours.

In whatever heat, rain, wind, or humidity the location handed us that day, there we stood.

What I learned to protect was sleep.

On the days I did not have to be up oh-dark-thirty, I let my body sleep as long as it needed. No alarm. No schedule pulling me out early.

I also learned to protect stretches of time when the earpieces came out and nothing was assaulting my ears.

Just quiet. Ah... the relief.

At the time, I would not have called any of this a health practice. I only knew that if I did not sleep when I had the chance and recover when I could, I would not make it through another demanding day of production.

Years later, I see this differently.

Recovery was part of what allowed me to do the work.

I think about that now when I travel and when I design journeys for other people. Filling every hour can leave very little room to absorb where you are. Some of the experience happens in the space around what you planned. In the pause.

The same is true at home.

When it all feels like too. much. to notice. one! more thing, recovery may be exactly what you need.

It may be worth asking what has been pressing on you all day that never eases up.

A full calendar. One decision after another. Other people's needs. A screen that keeps offering one more thing to read, answer, watch, or think about.

For me, it was two voices, one in each ear, on a beach. At the same time.

What is it for you?

PHOTO OP + ACTION OPPORTUNITY

Protecting Your Recovery

Photo Op

Protect one block of real recovery time this week, at least thirty minutes with your phone in another room and nothing asking for your attention. Take a photograph of wherever you spend that time.

Action Opportunity

Spend a few minutes looking at your photograph before you begin writing.

What did you notice once outside distractions stopped?

What have you been calling rest that still leaves you feeling “on”?

Then choose one day next week when you will protect that same block of time again. Put it on your calendar before everything else fills it.

Southeast Asia

November 18–December 2, 2026 | 15 Days

Some of the most restorative travel experiences come from what has not been scheduled. The pace of a journey changes how much of it you are able to take in.

That is something I have built into my upcoming Culinary & Cultural Journey Through Southeast Asia.

We travel through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand at a pace that leaves room for discovery. There is plenty to experience, from the markets and cooking traditions of Hoi An to sunrise at Angkor Wat. There is also time along the way to absorb where you are, wander, and let the experience settle in.

A Note on My Guided Journeys

For the journeys I personally host, the experience continues after you return home. Your trip includes my online course, Take a Shot at Happiness: A Happiness Explorer’s Journey (a $997 value), to help you stay connected to what you experienced once you return home.

Why Travel with Me

I have spent enough years working in demanding places to know what happens when every hour is treated as available.

I design travel differently.

I build journeys with breathing room, including time to sleep, sit, wander, change your mind, or simply have nowhere else you are supposed to be.

I want you to come home rested enough to keep what the journey gave you.
