Happy Thursday!
As October begins, I invite you to reflect on detachment—often misunderstood, yet deeply connected to peace and freedom—creating space to walk more lightly through life.
Why Detachment Matters
Detachment, letting go, frees you from being ruled by outcomes you cannot control.
Happiness and wellbeing are also closely connected to this practice. When you hold on too tightly—to relationships, ambitions, or past mistakes—you create tension in your mind, heart, and body. The tighter the grip, the heavier the burden, the more you suffer. Detachment frees you from hurt, expectation, and regret.
When you release what no longer serves you, space opens for peace, creativity, and joy. This is why detachment is one of the Happiness Essentials I write about: it restores harmony, energy, and helps you see with greater clarity. Detachment is not about caring less. It is about caring in ways that serve you, and releasing what no longer does.
My Experience
In my television world, I have sometimes held on to a project far too tightly, especially when I sensed it was slipping away—because it was. I thought more effort would turn things my way. Instead, projects drifted further from reach. What I did not see was how attached I had become to the struggle itself and its result. When I finally paused to reassess, my perspective shifted. The moment I let go of my attachment to outcomes, new avenues opened—doors I never imagined, horizons that filled my heart with renewed meaning.
A Practice for Peace and Freedom
When you feel weighed down, try this:
- Write down one situation or thought you have been carrying heavily.
- Notice the emotions that rise as you see it on the page.
- Say inwardly: I release what no longer serves me.
- Honor the release by burning the paper, letting the act become a physical reminder of freedom.
This practice moves detachment from an idea into a physical act.
Personal Reflection
Think of something you have been holding onto way too tightly—a memory, a relationship, an outcome. What might open for you if you softened that grip, even slightly?
Photo Op
Take a photo that, for you, reflects the feeling of release. It may be in nature, in a gesture, or in a quiet moment you notice.
Action Opportunity
Return to that image later in the week. Let it prompt you to ask: “What am I still holding on to, and how would letting go create more space or energy in my life?” Write your response in the Take a Shot at Happiness App.
